Taking photographs of animals and birds can be challenging, ideally these should show the subject performing tasks that are interesting to the viewer. Birds etc looking static just does not make an interesting photograph. Such photographs could be taken anytime, today or 50 years ago. They do however have one purpose, as a stock reference photo. So a mixture of both types of images can be viewed in the galleries in this website.

One of the most challenging subjects to photograph are mamals such as Dolphins. These can now be seen in the River Forth, however being out of sight most of the time photographing one as it briefly comes out of the water is difficult but rewarding task. Photographing Insects has its own challenges as they are so small. Photographs of any type of insect can show detailed information not normally seen. It is not necessary to have specialised lenses to photograph them as Macro to Telephoto lens can be used. Photographing botanicals is interesting with different seasons creating different subjects in both the garden and in the wild. Nature Reserves, at Birnie and Gaddon Loch, Beecraigs Country Park and Loch Leven are a useful sources for photographing both wildlife and landscapes. Nature in the wild can be challenging however getting good photographs where animals and birds are in captivity can be just as challenging. Trips to zoos such as Fife, Jersey and Edinburgh Zoos are always worthwhile as can parks specialising in specific types of animals/birds such as the Scottish Owl and Scottish Deer centres.

Perhaps one ot the more unusual sources for wildlife images is very close to Edinburgh Airport. Infact just outside the perimeter fence of the airport with the runway being a couple of hundred yards away there are a variety of animals, birds, insects and botanical subjects.
