Aviation

Photograph of aviation mainly taken at Edinburgh Airport.

Aviation can be categorized in so many ways. It is a relatively new subject to me and I have in the main restricted the images to aviation within Scotland and even more so by only taking them within the immediate area where I live. The one exception, photos have also been taken at San Javier Airport in Spain, when I have been on holiday.

Photographs various aspects of Edinburgh Airport including the Wildlife close by.- Photos taken of various aspects of Edinburgh Airport.
Photographs of Airfields in Scotland and also San Javier in Spain.- Photos taken at other Airports and Airfields.
Photographs of Insects.- General Aviation Photographs.
Photographs of Wild Life at Edinburgh Airport.- Photographs of iconic Aircraft.

Images taken at Edinburgh Airport form the bulk of my aviation related images. The area outside the perimeter fence where most of the images are taken allows interesting images to be taken although it can be a challenge sometimes as it is South facing and on sunny days heat haze can be a big problem as can shooting directly into the sun. While windy and wet days might not be ideal for flying, the images taken on these days can be a bit more dramatic than normal. The spray generated when an aircraft accelerates down the runway or the opposite when reverse thrust is applied on landing can be very dramatic. Where I take the photographs is also very good for capturing Wildlife. Just outside the perimeter fence the small strip of land where I stand, which is also bordered by the River Almond is a source of many species of Wildlife.

It is not just the action on the runway that is photographed, various aspects of the day to day airport life is also photographed. While not a military base, military aircraft from the UK and overseas do make an appearance.

Away from Edinburgh Airport images are taken at other airports and airfields which are reasonably local to me. Balado, East Fortune, Fife, Dundee, Perth, and Portmoak (Gliding) are all good sources for images. The variety of aircraft using these airports make visits interesting, many are privately owned and built.

While there are numerous aircraft made by various manufactures, some do become my favourites, so separate albums have been created for Spitfires, Vulcan Bombers, Catalina’s and two that I have been a passenger in, Britten Norman Islanders and Dragon Rapides.

A fair amount of success has been achieved with these images, with commercial pilots wanting to buy some as have Airlines, Air Charter companies and aircraft engine manufacturers. Also as a result of taking photographs of private aircraft I have been given flights in small aircraft from Fife Airport which were amazing.
